Muscles are Responsible for more than Strength
Muscles are important for more than just looking strong...
Muscles are responsible for:
- They give us energy...the more muscle you have, the more ATP production because muscle tissue is metabolically active meaning it consumes energy even at rest. Larger muscles have more muscle fibers which increase energy demands for maintenance and during physical activity. So in short, more muscle mass through strength training means a higher ceiling for ATP production.
- Greater muscle mass improves our hormone function...strength training has been shown to increase testosterone levels. A study by the Journal of Applied Physiology found a significant increase in testosterone in response to strength training along with reduced resting cortisol. Remember testosterone plays an important role in the development of muscle mass and strength, libido, bone density, cardiovascular health, cognitive performance and energy levels.
- Muscles are a storage vessel for glycagen...they give you back the energy you need when doing your strength training workouts.
If you do regular strength training workouts and eat the right foods ie high quality protein, you can eat more and still lose body fat which is a very positive way to change your body composition, improve mental and physical health and speed up your metabolism.
