Protein for Physical Healing
Case Study (Reference: Dr Lyon, Forever Strong):
Drawing on times of trauma or illness we draw on our amino acid reservoir even more!
A case study by Dr Lyon helps explain how protein synthesis is essential for physical healing. A Burns Reconstruction Unit for burn healing (depending on wound size) patients required three times the amount of protein recommended by the USDA.
This increased protein intake was necessary to provide the materials for protein synthesis that helps to rebuild and restructure new tissue.
During times of extreme healing the amino acid requirements of most tissues, including the liver cells and immune cells which rely heavily on the amino acid Glutamine, increase significantly.
Burn Unit healing is a dramatic example but shows that our bodies are always working to heal while coping with various states of stress.
This highlights our increased need for protein for physical healing, therefore we need to provide our bodies with adequate protein in order to allow for rapid recovery while sparing muscle tissue.
